Take a stroll through any retail store, and you will notice that merchandisers are already rolling out the tinsel, the trees, and the baubles and bows! We haven’t even carved the pumpkins or the turkey yet, but it’s time to get ready for CHRISTMAS!

Not to be left behind, Theatre teacher Danny Hobson and his talented cast and crew have already been in rehearsal for months preparing for their much anticipated holiday extravaganza, ELF the Musical! Based on the beloved holiday film, this hilarious fish out of water comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity.

Over the next few weeks, we want to turn the spotlight toward a few of the lead cast members you’ll be seeing take the stage December 2-5 at the Alma PAC!

Let’s start with the star of the show:

Senior Ryan Morris as Buddy the Elf!

Ryan has been racking up a lot of experience with Airedale Theatre. Other notable roles include:

The Addams Family (Pugsley Addams)
Charlotte’s Web (Avery Arable)
1776 (Robert Livingston)
Peter and the Starcatcher (Prentiss)

Why did you audition for the show?

I love being involved with theatre and have grown up watching Elf the movie every year, so getting to do such a fun and relatable show is exciting.

How are you preparing for your role?

With how many fun and energetic songs there are, I have been practicing that ever since I was cast. I’ve also developed more of an energetic attitude to understand Buddy’s emotions

What’s been your biggest challenge as Buddy?

Having to balance a lead role with all of my school work and other activities. I am heavily involved with the band so it’s been difficult trying to balance out practices for both organizations.

What’s one fun fact you would like the audience to know about you?

I have been “acting” since four for my church’s annual Christmas Drive Thru!

How is being in the theatre program at Alma preparing you for the future?

It’s helped me develop better organizational and time management skills. It has also taught me how to be positive when things go bad and to never let you beat yourself up over a mistake you made but to grow.
